Over 200 Oswestry Advertizer readers who complained about the town’s water supply have been told no further action will be taken on the matter.
The news comes after David Essex, the Water Strategy Manager for Severn Trent Water, and Gary Dixon, the Customer Services Director of United Utilities Water attended talks at the Guildhall aimed at finding assurances and possible alternatives to the supply.
One of the alternatives is to use Natural Welsh water as they supply water coolers and filter systems and you can call them on 01691-700000
But the company confirmed the water met the legal obligations and would not be making any changes due to costs.
MP Owen Paterson, who chaired the meeting alongside Sir James Perowne, chairman of the Consumer Council for Water, said the meeting was positive and Severn Trent had agreed to take on board the many concerns that had been voiced.
“With [Severn Trent's] current huge investment in the town and their commitment from today to look at accelerations in further elements of their work programme I am encouraged by their total commitment to ensure improvement,” he said.
But the news will come as a big disappointment for readers who joined the Advertizer’s campaign to improve the town’s water supply.
Many had written in to say the water had a metallic taste, whilst others said it had discoloured their cups, baths and even tea towels.
Grateful to readers
Chairman of the Water Forum, Councillor John Evans, said: “Unfortunately, those who will not benefit from this meeting are the people of Oswestry.
“The result has been disappointing, but this is a matter that the council will not lose sight of.
“The response from readers of the Advertizer has been excellent and we are grateful to them and the newspaper for its assistance on this long, hard journey,” he added.
Earlier in the week Severn Trent boasted a drop in consumer complaints, stating they were down by a third from the previous year.
The figures published by the Consumer Council for Water showed a decrease of almost 23 per cent.
Following the meeting the company said that any continuing problems should be reported and would be followed up.
Oswestry Town Mayor, Councillor Elaine Channon, said: “The Town Council was pleased to arrange this important meeting and we would like to thank people for sending in their complaints.
“Severn Trent have taken the coupons away with them and will be analysing each one with the possibility of arranging further tests in the future as they are taking this matter extremely seriously,” she added.
Another meeting will take place in the New Year to monitor the situation.
As a local Oswestry man and someone who has experienced the problems first-hand, Mike Webb is passionate about the campaign to improve the water supply in the town. He believes that everyone has the right to drink pure and natural water that is free from chemicals and bad tastes and odours.
In 2005, Mike set up Natural Welsh Water, a family-owned firm based in Oswestry which supplies and delivers water coolers (both hot and cold) to offices, homes and schools across the UK.
Natural Welsh Water recently carried out a taste test among 157 people in Oswestry town centre to see if they could tell the difference between tap water and bottled water. The results were pretty conclusive. Out of the 157 people who took the test, only four could not taste the difference. The vast majority said that the tap water left an after taste and that the bottled water was the preferred option.
Natural Welsh Water offers a cost-effective alternative to tap water, both bottled and mains filtered, guaranteeing crystal clear, clean water at anytime.
